Yesterday Jenny Lewis dropped her latest track 'The Voyager' into the cybersphere, and I am too stoked on it. Lewis has been one of my favorite artists since her Rilo Kiley days, and my love for her only deepened as she developed her solo act. I listened to Rabbit Fur Coat for the better part of high school, and it's still my go-to album whenever I'm making my way across Interstate 5. Years later, I had the pleasure of seeing her perform Acid Tongue and I'm Having Fun Now (with Johnathan Rice) in Los Angeles and Seattle, respectively. At that point, she went from an artist I respected to a role model and an inspiration in my own creative processes, so they were some of the most exciting and fulfilling shows I had attended. Now I'm just gushing but I can't help it. Just reading this NPR First Listen article has me breaking out in anticipatory hives.
Her album (also entitled The Voyager) isn't due out until the 29th of July, but if The Voyager, She's Not Me and Just One of the Guys are any indications of the candid lyrics and poignant melodies to come, I'm pretty sure I've just figured out the soundtrack to the rest of my summer. Let's be honest - maybe even for the rest of 2014.
